, republicans are outraged over chuck hagel's nomination for defense secretary. meanwhile, they have no problem with known conspiracy theorist michele bachmann, congresswoman from minnesota, retaining her seat on the house intelligence committee. remember, it was bachmann who led the witch-hunt against clinton's aide last year. in a wild conspiracy theory, bachmann claimed she had ties to a muslim extremist group. her campaign against muslims included absurd statements like this. >> it appears that there has been deep penetration in the halls of our united states government by the muslim brotherhood. the muslim brotherhood has been found to be an unindicted co-conspirator on terrorism cases, and yet it appears that there are individuals associated with the muslim brotherhood who have positions, very sensitive positions in our department of justice, our department of homeland security, potentially even in the national intelligence agency. >> bachmann's muslim witch-hunt drew a wide range of criticism from both parties. her former presidential campaign chief ed rollins slammed the baseless attack

that jack lew will be a fight just as chuck hagel will be a fight, just as susan rice was a fight. the second problem for president obama is that so far his chosen bantd doesn't include any sisters, nor does it include any racial diversity. even members of his own party are expressing dismay. new york democrat charlie rangel called the lack of women embarrassing as hell and yesterday chairwoman of the congressional black caucus, marcia fudge wrote a letter urging the president to nominate two members of the cbc. bill, you are a former diverse member of the president's -- >> still diverse. >> yes. you remain diverse, though not sequestered at 1600 pennsylvania avenue, for which we are thankful. i wonder what you make about this contention that he is being too insular, a, in terms of the possibility of group think, people that have been with him forever, and then, b, how much is the diversity problem for him? >> well, i'll start with b. you know, i think that what we're seeing here is more of an optics problem than it is a real problem because by the numbers half of the white house

with president obama like chuck hagel and jack lew and republicans delayed 85% of the planned relief funding for hurricane sandy. that, of course, drew a strong rebuke from republican governor chris christie. this is not politics devoted to a competing vision. this is politics devoted to digs corruption and obstruction, and those recent fights i mentioned don't even include the explosion of minority obstruction in the u.s. senate. the filibuster has been used against more of obama's legislation than any president in history. the bottom line is that the gop is exploiting what i think is a hole in our democracy. can you lose elections and still get your way now if you don't care about responsibly governing. of course, it's hard to get voters to notice this kind of thing, but i believe obama has a big opportunity at the inauguration. he can call for more than just broad patriotism or vague unity. he can call out the amorality of a political party that would rather threaten man made crises than actually gonchings avern, advocate for cooperation. i think it's worth a try >> the majority of republ

to talk with david gregory about chuck hagel but also bringing up the gop intolerance that he has witnessed and what he feels like exists now in d.c. take a listen. >> i think the republican party right now is having an identity problem. and i'm still a republican. i think what the republican party needs to do now is take a very hard look at itself and understand that the country has changed. the country is changing demographically. and if the republican party does not change along with the demographic, they're going to be in trouble. >> andrea, over the last 24 hours what's the reaction been in washington, d.c. to colin powell and what his thoughts are about the gop and the future? >> you know, colin powell does not do many interviews and he went on with david gregory to make the points about chuck hagel but also knowing he would be asked these questions because it's been very much on people's minds. where is the. party going? and i'm taking back to 2000 when i was covering the republican convention in philadelphia and colin powell gave his speech and at the time he was at the he

, moving on to chuck hagel. he's been described as you know as a homophobic anti-semitic lover of hamas. doesn't this come down to where he said this about the pentagon. it is bloated and needs to be pared down. that's his greatest sin isn't it? >> that is one of them. i think the other was questioning the iraq war and eventually coming out and opposing the iraq war and saying after he cast the vote in favor of the iraq war, coming back and saying you know what? this was the wrong move. that created a lot of animosity. and we have seen criticism from the left. i do want to see a confirmation process. i want to know how he'll behave towards lbgt members of the military. >> and he has already apologized for those statements. >> absolutely. absolutely. but the charges that -- i mean, the thing that has really been ludicrous is because he hasn't been with mccain and lieberman an every vote in israel, not only is his anti-israel, he's anti-semitic. i think that shuts down any debate on the topic. >> had a change of heart as he was saying on the iraq war. and as peter binehart writes on the d

that the president's nominees so far have absolutely been spot on. particularly with senator chuck hagel taking over defense department. he did try to get susan rice before senator kerry took it. i think you raised a legitimate point as he continues his nominations. take for example the transportation. he has an ideal choice here to pick a woman, a republican. senator hutchison from texas who really understands the infrastructure challenges of our nation. and i think as a republican can help us raise money in public-private ventures. understanding government can't get the $100 billion needed for our roads that need repair and enhancement. we have to do it like the state of illinois did. city of chicago did. do private-public ventures. but the president did appoint two people who were women to the supreme court. but i do think this is a legitimate point as he continues on. >> hogan, i'm curious about the debt ceiling fight. we know that is looming. it is expected to get nasty. how much do you think the republicans are going to take on the president, take on the democrats? you see what senator harry r

jack lew and chuck hagel continue to be targeted by republicans willing to block anything president obama puts forward. the gop's threat make an excellent case for why democrats must take action on filibuster reform. i'm joined tonight by howard dean, former governor of vermont and former chair of the dnc. governor dean, good to have you with us tonight. >> thanks for having me on, ed. >> you bet. is this just something harry reid has to do? i mean, if you look at taxation. >> yeah. >> if you look at gun legislation, how could any of this not get filibustered based on what we saw in the 112th? >> actually, the filibuster is designed to thwart the will of the majority. but the problem is not that, because our constitution protects the minority, which is a good thing. the problem is the republicans have made it in a farce. and basically, brought the business of the entire government to a halt. so that's why it must be changed. i'm not for getting rid of it, but i am for changing it dramatically so it can't be abused anymore there are some really important things that face this country
